Visit Slovakia’s Churches and Get Acquainted with the Country’s Stunning Architecture

On your first visit to Slovakia, it is highly likely that you will fall in love with the country. The majestic mountains, lush forests, incredible castles – all combine to give you the perfect place where you can spend few days to few weeks without worrying about getting bored. From exciting adventure sports like skiing and mountain biking to peace and relaxation of a spa resort, you will get it all here. After seeing and experiencing the Slovak wonders, if you feel you are not quite satisfied, there is more awaiting you. Slovakia boasts a rich culture and heritage, which is evident everywhere. While the ruins of castles speak of the bygone times, the old churches reflect the country’s religious beliefs and practices.

Kostol sv. Michala:
Kostol sv. Michala, known as the Church of St Michael in English, stands lonesome on the ground with no other construction in close proximity. The church is situated in Dražovce, within the territory of the urban district of Nitra. Dražovce is a popular archeological site where signs of Slav settlement have been discovered, along with a cemetery that belongs to the period of the Great Moravian Empire. This well-preserved and picturesque Romanesque church adds a charm to the historical attractiveness of the village. Although the church has been adapted repeatedly, it was originally built on the site where in the Iron Age, a fort stood high. Take a short walk to the church, and you will be gifted with interesting views of the town and its surroundings.

Kostol sv. Mikuláša:
The Church of St Nicholas, locally known as Kostol sv Mikuláša, is a parish that was built sometime around the mid-14th century. The tall towers of the church have been reconstructed following the gothic style of architecture. The construction of the church was completed in 1515. In 1788, the church caught fire, and since then several reconstructions and medications have taken place in the structure of church. However, despite all these modifications, the gothic elements of the architecture have been well preserved, and it is evident in the windows, domes and portals.

Kostol Zvestovania Panny Márie:
While you are on the Gothic Road, the first thematic route that connects the former counties of Gemer and Spis, you have got to make a stop at one of the most valuable Catholic Roman churches that defines gothic architecture. The Kostol Zvestovania Panny Márie or Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is situated in the village of Chyžné. The ceiling of the church features painted panels from 1745. The baptistery also boasts original gothic windows. You will also find a gothic portal at the eastern end of the nave. The baptistery’s inner walls are decorated with medieval wall paintings. Master Pavol from the Slovak town of Levoča had designed the Late Gothic main alter. The construction began from 1508 when a group of statues were built.

These three churches bear their unique characteristics, and they will enrich you in Slovakia’s rich gothic architectural history. Visit these churches to complete your trip to the country.
