Want to get to know the heart and soul
of Slovakia? Well, you should start with the famous holidays and
festivals. There is probably no better way of understanding a country’s
culture than through its festivals. Holidays are the time of the year
when families, friends and loved ones get together to spend some quality
time and have a good time. Slovakian holidays are no different. They
are based on the history and traditions. As far as public holidays are
concerned, Slovaks get 14 a year, which is a lot considering other
European nations. Most of the government and corporate organizations and
institutions stay closed on the public holidays. Here are some of those
popular public holidays that you should know about:
January 1st, Emergence of Slovakia:
In 1993, due to some political reasons,
it was decided that Czechoslovakia will be split into two separate
nations – Czech Republic and Slovakia. Thus, happened the emergence of
the Slovakia that we know of today. The separation happened peacefully
and no conflict took place over it. For over two decades, Slovakia has
been running as an independent democratic country, and the nation even
has its own symbol and a new flag.
January 6th, Feast of the Epiphany:
Three Kings is among the oldest
Christian holidays that are celebrated by many of Slovakia’s Christian
churches. This holiday celebrates the day God revealed his son’s stars
to all the nations. This day is also the reminder of the three wise men
who came to Bethlehem from the east. They came to greet him with small
gifts such as frankincense, gold, and myrrh. Celebrating Epiphany is
considered extremely important by Catholic Churches.
Good Friday:
Also known as Great Friday or Holy
Friday, Good Friday commemorates the Crucifixion of Christ. The holiday
is celebrated on the Friday before the Easter Sunday. The occasion falls
in one of the days of Lent, a strict religious tradition where 40 day
long fasting is kept preceding Easter.
Easter Monday:
On the Easter, Christians celebrate the
resurrection of Christ. Both the atheists and the faithful ones
celebrate Easter in the same manner. As far as the tradition goes, men
and boys are supposed to wake women and girls by throwing a bucket of
water on them, and by slashing them with decorated handmade whips. The
women and the girls, on the other hand, reward the men and the boys by
gifting them money, sweets or Easter eggs.
May 1st, International Worker’s Day:
The holiday was declared as a public
holiday after the establishment of Czechoslovakia in the year 1919.
Celebrations are held in the honor of those who fought against
unemployment, and the deteriorating status quo of the working class.
From 1933 to 1938, the celebrations also signified the protest against
war and fascism.
May 8th, End of World War II:
Joseph Stalin, the Red Army’s supreme commander declared this day to be a public holiday on 9th
May, 1945. The end of WWII was definitely something to celebrate. This
day commemorates the end of war and the beginning of a more peaceful
world.
