Top Places to Visit in Slovakia

Be it with its scenic beauty or characteristic charm, Slovakia has attracted millions of tourists since it separated from Czechoslovakia and became a democratic country. Although, the country has a very humble tourism motto, it does not fail to amaze or captivate its visitors. If you are planning to visit this small yet stunning country, making an itinerary beforehand will surely help you make the most of your trip. This is especially true if you are visiting only for a few days. Here are few of the must-do activities that you should definitely try when in Slovakia:

Hiking on High Tatras:
High Tatras is definitely one of the most famous destinations in the country, and a hike from Strbske pleso will help you experience the best of what Slovakia has to offer you. You can simply park your car and take a short and neat walk up that will help you reach the waterfalls. It takes around 3 hours to and from to take this hike. Although it may seem like quite a physical activity, the view of the picturesque landscapes will help you forget any toil that you may had to do to get there.
Visiting the magical Spis Castle:
If history attracts you, this 900 year old ruin should definitely be on your list! Aside from being a part of Slovakia’s rich history, the Spis Castle is also the biggest castle in Europe. Situated in the beautiful countryside of travertine rock, the landscape stretches for miles, untouched and unspoilt. A visit to this magical castle will take you back in time. The Spis Castle has been listed as one of the most important monuments in the world by UNESCO. The large and profound landscape offers you a lot to explore. So, you can spend the whole day wandering about the area.

Cruising Cerveny klastor:
If you visit Slovakia anytime between 1st May and 30th October, you will get to experience the bewitching cruise that is carried out on the traditional flatboats Dunajec from Cerveny klastor in the Pieniny Mountains. The area boasts a rich folk artistic and historical heritage, along with a distinctive architecture and folklore. Beautiful scenery, rocky ridges, and undisturbed peace and calm make this place truly exceptional! If you are into angling or kayaking, Pieniny is the place where you should be. Also a paradise for bikers and cycling enthusiasts, the landscape provides a number of interesting tracks. But if you are an adventurous soul, looking to experience something new, try folk rafting in the Dunajec River on the traditional wooden rafts!

Checking out folk architecture:
Skanzens is popularly called the open air museum villages. These are scattered all over Slovakia, and are surely worth a visit. If you want to get more familiar with the country’s rich folk history, these villages will give you valuable insight. Aside from the architecture of the past, you will also get to see what the basics of life were, and how the rich and the poor lived in those times. These museums include examples of buildings, furniture, churches, schools, manor houses, craftmen’s workshops and so on.
