Celebrate This Christmas In The Republic Of Slovakia

Travelling to Slovakia for Christmas? You have made a great choice, Slovakia, with the most magnificent beauty nestling amidst the snow capped mountains, the rich vineyards, spectacular architectural monuments and buildings, celebrates the Christmas and call it the Generous Day.

Slovakia’s Christmas traditions are similar to those of the Czech Republic. Christmas in Slovakia takes place on December 25th. The Bratislava Christmas market is a major annual event in Slovakia’s capital, and it allows visitors to celebrate Christmas the Slovakian way even if they won’t be staying though the holidays.
Slovakians celebrate Christmas Eve by decorating the Christmas tree and sitting down to a Christmas Eve feast. The breaking and sharing of wafers precedes dinner. Christmas carp, along with other traditional Slovakian foods, are served during the Christmas Eve dinner.

Ježiško, Baby Jesus, brings presents to children and places them under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. The counterpart to Santa Claus in Slovakia is Father Frost, or Dedo Mraz. But St. Mikulas can also visit children on St. Nicholas’ Day on December 5.

The Slovak words for Christmas Eve are literally bountiful eve and the bounty of this sacred evening lies in the wide range of festive dishes, of which there had to be twelve different kinds. Even today many Slovak families must have on the Christmas table garlic (to ward off demons), honey, wafers, nuts, cooked peas or French beans, dried fruit, and the main dish, cabbage soup with mushrooms and opekance – small pieces of dough – with poppy seed and honey. At the beginning of this century, fish has become the traditional meat served during Christmas Eve (their scales are said to bring wealth into the house) in the Catholic portion of the population while the Lutherans would add smoked meats and sausage to their cabbage soup. Christmas holidays are also very rich in Slovak pastries and baked goods that are prepared over many evenings during the month of December.

Midnight mass may be attended the night of Christmas Eve, and the family will spend the next two days together. The people in Slovakia celebrate Christmas with great enthusiasm. Children in Slovakia believe that Ježiško will bring gifts to them during Christmas. Many ancient Slovakian culinary specialties are prepared on Christmas Eve. Slovakian follow several customs during Christmas and the festival is celebrated on a grand scale.
