Famous Mountains in Slovakia’s Countryside

Starting in the westernmost side of Slovakia, the Carpathian mountain range spreads across the country. The Tatras Mountains represent the highest peaks of the Carpathian mountain range, the most striking mountain range in Europe. In all of north Europe, you won’t find a mountain range that is higher than this one. Because of this mountain range, Slovakia is known as the roof of central Europe. Water from the mountain tops into the Danube, and then it travels south to meet the Black Sea. Another stream of water runs through Dunajec, heading north and meeting the Baltic Sea. Aside from the Tatras, there are plenty of other mountainous regions in the country. Here are some of these places that you must visit:

National Park of High Tatras:
Established in 1949, the National Park of Tatras is the oldest of the protected areas in the northern regions of Slovakia. The national park is situated at the high-mountain area of the Tatra Mountains. Among all the European high mountains located on the northern side of the Alps, the National Park of Tatras features a unique collection of fauna and flora. Back in the day when the national park was established, it was the first of its kind in all of Slovakia. After 5 years, the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains got a similar statute. Since 1993 the Slovak and Polish side of the High Tatras together constitute the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

National Park of Nízke Tatry:
The National Park of Nizke Tatry, locally known as Národný Park Nízke Tatry, is the largest national park of Slovakia. Located in central Slovakia, the national park houses some great attractions such as caves, karstic phenomena and so on. For over 20 years, the natural values of the Nizke Tatry Mountains have been preserved and protected. Since the time of establishment in 1978, The National Park of Nizke Tatry has attracted millions of tourists and it continues to do so. Originally, the national park covered an area 811 square kilometers along with the protective belt, which spanned across 1,240 square kilometers. In 1997, the area of the national park was expanded to ensure better protection of the whole territory. Now the national park covers an area of 728 square kilometers, along with the protective belt of 1,102 square kilometers. Because of its large expansion, the Národný Park Nízke Tatry is Slovakia’s largest national park.

National Park of Slovenský raj:
Situated in Slovakia’s eastern region, the National Park of Slovenský raj is home to some of the biggest caves of Europe. The gorgeous landscape of Karst Plateau contains caves, gorges and waterfalls. Also the country’s and the region’s oldest monuments are also located here. The administrative seat of this national park is in Spišská Nová Ves. National Park of Slovenský raj is also the youngest national parks in Slovakia. The landscapes along the boundary between Spiš and Gemer earned the status of one of the Protected Landscape Area in 1964. The national park occupies an area of 328 square kilometers.
