Most of us probably got surprised the first time we came to know that Slovakia is no more the province of the Czech Republic. It has been over two decades that the breakup of Czechoslovakia took place, and now Slovakia is an independent state, going stronger than ever! Slovakia outshines the Czechs in many ways, be it for its ancient castles that are spread across the country like cherries on cake, or for its natural beauty that is unlike anything you have ever seen! The country’s heartland, set amidst lofty mountains and dense forests, still cradles a mesmerizing folk culture that many of Europe’s famous nations have lost.
Don’t mistake Slovakia’s small expansion to be its weakness. It is, in fact, one of the country’s greatest strengths. Here you can cover a truly diverse landscape within a short period of time. One day, you could be hiking through woodsy, waterfall-filled gorges, and on the very next afternoon, you might be yodeling down mountain peaks that soar higher than 2500m. Bratislava, the seemingly dinky capital, features a stunning backdrop of thick forests, and is home to some of the best museums in the country. The Old Town, although overcrowded with residents and tourists, can very well win the first prize for the numerous cafes that bear some special charms of their own!
Slovakia’s humble and modest tourism motto, “A Part of Europe worth Visiting”, does shed some light on the core characteristics of the country. Despite lacking an aggressive or robust approach, Slovakia manages to attract thousands of tourists from different corners of the world every year. Perhaps, it is the subtlety and down-to-earth appeal that draws most of the crowds to this nation. If you are tired of the rudeness or the over-confidence of most of the world-renowned destinations, you are sure to have a good time here in the lap of nature where you will be treated as a treasured guest!
When you talk about the famous attractions of Slovakia, the list is quite long. If you desire to get away from your humdrum existence to be at a place that will fill you in with a calm serenity, this is the place where you will get to rejuvenate your soul. Some of the famous locations that you must visit when in Slovakia include:
- High Tatras
- Spis Castle
- Hungarian Rhapsody
- Bardejov
- Slovenský Raj National Park
- Eastern Europe, Croatia & the Balkans
- Čičmany
- Vrátna Valley
- Banská Štiavnica
- Bratislava Castle
- Church of St Jacob
