Make Your Trip To Slovakia More Enriching With A Visit To Bratislava Castle
When it comes to the history of this ancient castle, you will find varied information on it. The first reference to this castle was mentioned in the year 907, although this place on the rocky hill shows some evidences of settlement since the Bronze Age. Quite naturally, this castle has gone through several transformations, first being established as a fortress and then being modified as a residence for the royal families. With several reconstructions, this castle has borne many names also. Sometimes called as Sigismund`s castle and sometimes as Pressburg, it has proved how important it was in the ancient eras. Not just changes in the structures, it has also endured the devastating fire in 1811 which ruined the entire castle, the then palace of Price Albert. The destroyed palace rose from the ashes almost more than a century later in 1968 and now the repaired parts serve as a museum to the travelers.
The present structure of the castle, though different from its previous ones, carries a lot of impressions of the earlier periods. First of all, you can’t avoid noticing how huge the building is. It is a rare freedom that you enjoy in other museums of the world of moving easily from one room to another, but here you get that privilege. Look through the windows and you can see the wonderful view of the entire Bratislava. At first, it was built as a proto-romanesque structure during the Hungarian rule and then found a gothic form in the renaissance period. When Maria Theresa came to throne, she changed the castle into a palace adding the touch of luxury to it. At present, the castle has four towers along with an enormous courtyard. The walls, corridors and the staircases exude an old-world charm that will give you an idea about how the rulers lived.
The galleries of this castle will introduce you to approximately 2,50,000 antique pieces that include ancient furniture, sculptures and timepieces, the portraits of kings and queens, weapons as well as amazing silver ornaments worn by those who resided in the palace. Named as Slovak National Museum, the coveted Bratislava Castle at times overshadows the other tourist spots in Slovakia. It is known that Prince Albert patronized art and culture and so he collected some singular artistic evidences of the eighteenth century Europe. If you visit this place, you will find out a lot about the ancient European culture which you cannot dig out from anywhere else.
If you are in City Centre, then you can reach Bratislava Castle on foot. Or else opt for public transport or hire a car and enjoy a mind-enriching trip to this place.
