Here Is Why You Should Join The Slovaks For The Delightful Easter and Christmas Cuisines

Festivals give us the license to listen to our carefree heart and tempted tongue. Especially when we are travelling; there is no way our mind could escape such enticements. Particularly, when it is holiday time in Slovakia, focus on food becomes a delightful matter of fact. Christmas and Easter is celebrated majorly all around the world. But interestingly the eating habits are quite different from country to country. But it is always great for the big old foodies, who live to eat.

Slovakia Christmas marks from 24th with the Štedrý večer or Generous Evening. Our contemporary lifestyle, does not give us much chance, to spend time with family, but such festival is time for reunion as much is a family vacation. Christmas preparation begins weeks earlier with baking cookies, Christmas shopping and of course, buying of carp- a Slovak tradition. In the last post we mentioned about karpor or carp being the most significant part of Slovak tradition, let’s check out the drooling dishes in Slovakia.

Cigánska pečienka
Christmas market will give you a typical view of the festive foods, so hang around the markets which sits from November ends till the Christmas Eve. If you were among those who find an excuse to hog pork, this will be the ideal time to join the Slovaks, and taste the seasoned pork. You also have the option of chicken meat stuffing, wrapped inside the bread roll. Loksa is an indispensible part of the Slovak kitchen, thin pancakes filled with sweet of salty filling.

Zemiakový šalát
Well, it is a creamy potato salad, you will love to taste, widely known as the Russian Salad or even the Olivier Salad. Again the recipe would differ but each time for a different and delicious taste. You must have realized by this time the Slovaks enjoy a lot of boiled egg but never keep it bland. This traditional culinary is a culmination of nicely cut boiled eggs in cubes with onion and pickles.

Wines and Spirits
The high spirits of any celebration in Slovakia is not arranged without wines. Slovakia is renowned for its widespread viticulture tradition. So drink as much high quality smooth or hard white and red wines you wish, that’s what the locals do as well. Young wine called burciak is hugely sold, from the start of the fall. Find them especially in the vintner regions like the Lesser Carpathians or Nitra. At the mountains locals prefer mostly the distilled alcoholic drinks called Palenky. Also taste the Slivovica that will leave the taste of fruits specially plums in your tongue.

Hrudka, paska and vajíčka
Hrudka is an Easter Special in the Eastern Slovakia, but the salivating traditional specialty has endless variety, from sweet to salty recipe. You can dip your mouth to this platter which is overloaded with cheese cut into pieces and eaten with paska bread. Paska is a type of white bake bread which is best eaten with an egg dish. Imagine the perfectly boiled and sliced eggs are mixed well with ham and sausages on the pan and tossed till the smoky sizzling smell, fills the air. Paska is a sweet made with cottage cheese and gold raisins.

So long live the Christmas celebrations! Hail to the Slovak traditional culinary for the love of humanity and hunger!
