Celebrate Slovak Folk: Music, Dance And Culture This Holiday

Slovakia is one of the richest countries in the world and Europe upholding its cultural traditions from folklore, folk dance, music and handicrafts even in the 21st century. The interesting folk customs have been passed from one generation to the other and some of the most popular artistic groups representing the traditions are Sľuk and Lúčnica from Bratislava, Šarišan in Prešov, to name a few. Every district in the past used to have their dialects and customs and not just a typical folk costumes.

Music
Music played a very vital role in the past and even today from rituals to ceremonies, from entertainment to leisure. Folk music as in the world, in Slovakia as well was an artistic expression and that even today inspires living to the greatest extent. The historical past is remembered by the folk songs and honored. One of the most significant folk songs; the folk ballads reflects early Slovak’s desires of liberty and freedom in the lyrics. Folk music was born from the folk songs and every year folk festivals bring alive the spirit of folk music. The biggest folk festivals are held in Detva and Východná.

As you move from one region to the other you will observe a regional variation in the Slovak folk music but only for the better. The regional variations in a same song would be in terms of additional versions or different music. Some places you will notice the difference in instrument composition, from string to more brass.

One of the brilliant and most identifiable instrument that originated in the Detva land is the high shepherd pipe, also called the Fujara. It has also been recognized by the UNESCO for its simplicity and basic operation. You will be fortunate to hear this instrument during the Days of Czechoslovak, in the village Korytarky of Podpol’anie. Another Heligonka Festival in Slovakia plays the special, simple folk and a popular form of accordion.

Slovak Folk music had a huge impact on modern music and classical compositions. Slovaki National Anthem has also been drawn from the theme of a poplar folk song called, kopala Studienku, meaning ‘Digging the Wall’. If you are fond of Slovak music, some of the famous bands you know, Vidiek, Lojzo, Elan, Banda and Tublatanka are all inspired from the folk songs.

Dance
Colorful and luscious Slovakia is blessed with beautiful and varied dance culture from the old folk days just like the interesting architected monuments and towns and also the interesting people inhibiting here. You will be thoroughly pleased with the age of folk dances, reflecting the simplicity of village life and also their expression of freedom at the same time. Even the modern and elaborate choreographies today reflect the culture and movement; they have succeeded in upholding the Slovak identity despite years of subjugation.
Dance notations such as the young miner’s dance of Nová Bahá from 1676 and iconographic memorials such as, the Senica pulpit, 1692 also bear testimony to the dance. Dances such as the shovel dance, hat dance, candle dance, pawn dance, poppy seed dance, rooster dance, Slovakian dance, and heyduk are all mentioned in literature from this period by such writers as Daniel Speer, Ambrus Keezer, and Ladislav Bartholomeides. During the 18th and 19th centuries dances were described and mentioned frequently in various literary and local history works.
