Maintain Safety While Hiking in Slovakia

A trip to Slovakia remains incomplete without a hiking trip. Just like a foodie cannot go to Italy and not eat pizza, an outdoorsy person cannot visit Slovakia without spending at least one day hiking. There are wonderful hiking trails along the Tatra Mountains that are just too good to miss! Whether you are a pro hiker or simply a beginner, you will find hiking spots that are suitable for you. To get the best hiking experience, you must follow all the safety measures that are specified by the guides. Raincoat, good shoes and a water bottle are strongly recommended hiking gears that you must have with you.

Slovakia’s climate can be unpredictable, especially during fall and spring. The weather can go from warm and sunny to windy and chilly in a matter of hours. Wearing layers is thus crucial for hikers. Before you head out of your hotel room, make sure to apply some repellent on your body and face. Ticks are quite common in the dense forests, and they can transmit tick-borne meningecephalitis or Lyme disease. Neither of these are desirable conditions, so you need to take precautions. However, despite applying insect repellent, if you do spot a black insect on your skin, quickly remove it using tweezers.

If you are aiming for an overnight hiking trip, you should know that government rules prohibit you from setting up camps within the boundaries of the national parks. You would, however, find huts along the hiking trails that are perfect for overnight stays. You can book such a hut to spend the night.

Search, rescue and pay:
While hiking, if you get lost or injured, you can call Slovakia’s national search-and-rescue squad for help. Known as HZS or Slovak Mountain Rescue Service in English, the search and rescue team is very efficient and they can help you out in dire situations. However, they require you to pay a certain fee in exchange of their services. Depending on the seriousness of the operation, the costs may range from €116 to €9,960. This means that hikers and skiers must have sufficient insurance coverage to pay for these expenses should the unthinkable happens during a demanding ski or hike. During an emergency, when the rescuers arrive, you must do everything as they say. Ignoring their commands may cost you up to €3,320 as fine.

Beware of wolves and bears:
If you didn’t know already, Slovakia is one of the very few European countries where wolves and bears still freely roam around in the wilderness. Although they are rarely lethal and no one has actually died from a bear attack in 100 years, you should maintain safety. Bears don’t usually come near the settlements, but instances are there where people have been injured from bear attacks. Just the sheer size and appearance of bears make them seem so scary. To prevent a close encounter with a bear, you should refrain from clapping, singing, beating drums and talking loudly. Make sure to be extra cautious if you suspect bears to be around.
