Famous National Parks in Slovakia

Slovakia is a paradise for all nature lovers. From soaring mountains and lush forests to picturesque landscapes, the country has so much to offer. If you want to see just how majestic nature can be, you must visit Slovakia’s national parks. There are several national parks in the country, and they all feature mountains as the greatest attraction. From the snow capped summits of the High Tatras down to the hilly area of Poloniny, there is a lot to see here. Mountains provide the lifeblood of this nation, supplying fresh air and water. Take a look at some of these popular national parks:

High Tatras or Vysoke Tatry:
The most famous, best-loved and most visited national park in Slovakia, the High Tatras is definitely one of the must visit sites in the country. The alp-like peaks of the Tatra Mountains look absolutely marvellous! Here, you will get lots of opportunities for adventure sports like skiing (both cross-country and downhill) and guided mountain climbing. No matter where you are in Slovakia, you can reach the Vysoke Tatry by bus, train or car.

Low Tatras or Nizke Tatry:
The Low Tatras, locally known as Nizke Tatry, is the largest national park in Slovakia. Magnificent valleys and extensive rounded mountains adorn the landscapes of the Low Tatras. The national park offers great opportunities for outdoor sports. Here you will find facilities for all types of downhill skiing. Mountain biking is also one of the popular activities here. If you are more of an explorer, there are numerous caves available to tickle your curiosity. From north, the park is easily accessible through Liptovsky Mikulas. But if you are coming from South, you would have to come via Banska Bystrica.

Little Fatra or Mala Fatra:
This is the closest park to the Czech Republic, and it falls between High Tatras national park and Zilina. The Mala Fatra takes pride in its rocky peaks that offer stunning views from the main ridge. The Little Fatra is one of the most popular weekend destinations for hikers. Popular among locals and visitors alike, the Little Fatra is one of the country’s pride and joy. In the winters, when the mountains get covered in snow, visitors get the additional option of downhill skiing. You will also get to see some rich, traditional folk art if you explore the nearby towns and localities.

Big Fatra or Velka Fatra:
The large mountain range lying between Turiec and Liptov regions is known as the Velka Fatra or Big Fatra. The national park is best known for its long valleys and dense forests. The national park has been around for over three decades, and nature conversation activities are taking place for 30 years. This is the reason why most of the natural assets of this region are still in good shape. If you are hiking enthusiast, the Big Fatra should definitely be on your list of must visit Slovak regions.
