Places You Must Visit When in Kosice

Situated 400km E of Bratislava and 100km E of Poprad, Kosice is the second largest city in Slovakia, and it comes right after Bratislava. While in the past, Kosice was somewhat a smoggy and provincial backwater region of Slovakia. But within a short span of merely a decade, the city has transformed itself into one of the county’s most attractive urban destinations. Today, the whole world knows that Kosice houses East Slovakia’s industrial powerhouse, buoyant cultural scene and cosmopolitan clout. The city has always been a medieval gem that was waiting to be discovered. And now the latest addition of major arts installations along with impressively revamped buildings and enliven city streets have made Kosice one of the country’s pride and joy. If you are spending a few days here, you must try these few activities:

Cathedral of St Elizabeth:
The Cathedral of St Elizabeth was founded in the 14th century. Dark and brooding in character and feel, the cathedral is one of the sites that you must visit on your trip to Kosice. The easternmost Gothic cathedral of Europe, the cathedral dominates the square. There is a crypt right below the church, and it contains the tomb of Ferenc Rákóczi, the Duke who got exiled to Turkey after failing the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against Austria. If you make the laborious journey up the 160 narrow and circular stone stairs, you would reach the tower, from where you can get a spectacular view of the city!

East Slovak Museum:
If you want to witness some of Slovakia’s hidden treasures, you better check out the East Slovak Museum. In 1935, during a home renovation project on Hlavná, workers discovered a hidden stash of about 2920 gold coins that date back to 15 and 18th century. Here, you will also find different aspects of regional history displayed through a metal foundry and former prison. In the museum yard, you will find a 1741 wooden church.

Hlavné Nám:
When you are in Kosice, you cannot afford to miss out on the city’s long, shopping mall like Main Square. Hlavné Nám is definitely one of the most beautiful urban spots in the city. The central musical fountain is surrounded by flowerbeds. In the northern side, you will find a 1723 baroque plague column. You will also find a turn of the century kind of feel at the art nouveau Hotel Slávia, which is located at No 63. At No 27, on the other hand, you will find the Shire Hall. The Košice Government Program was proclaimed here in 1945. Today, you will find a minor gallery inside.
