Guide to Bratislava’s Beer Culture

We are all aware of the deep love Czechs share for beer, but what you may not have known is that the same passion is also spotted in Bratislava. The capital city of Slovakia takes its beer just as seriously as the Czechs do. Recently, however, Bratislava has seen a new wave of pubs and microbreweries. Although often located away from the touristy areas, these pubs and microbreweries are the ideal spot for a beer lover who is looking to get acquainted with Slovakia’s beer culture.

Most people would describe Bratislava as the humble beast that is often outshined by the dazzling popularity of Budapest and Vienna. The capital city is often ignored when tourists pick these more publicized cities over this one. A quick look at the Bratislava castle and a meaty meal at the local diner, and that is all tourists usually do before leaving the city. While regular tourists are attracted to things like thermal bath and Baroque façade, a beer lover will understand the charm of Bratislava.

When it comes to beer making, this Slovak city nurtures this art as passionately as its half brother Prague does. In recent years, with the advent of microbreweries, beer making has gained an all new momentum in Bratislava. Tucked away in the city’s unexplored corners, these pubs deserve your attention. Here are few of these places where your thirst for good beer will be satiated:

Meštiansky Pivovar:
To reach Meštiansky Pivovar, you would have to go past the main shopping hub, Obchodna, and travel down the side road that will lead you to this locally famed pub. Only a few years old, this giant, three-story pub has in a way resurrected the original essence of Bratislava’s brewing scene. The pub’s popular Pilsner-esque large is made using a combination of old recipes and modern brewing methods, and it comes in both light and dark forms.

Omama Shop Café:
You may not have previously planned on visiting the city’s college area, but now you have a reason to! The area may not be architecturally appealing, but it has the Omama Shop Café. It is not a microbrewery as per definition, but it does stock the local wheat beers and malts. Locals would recommend this place for its cozy ambience and delicious liquors. Hidden below street level the Omama Shop Café may not be the first thing you will see here. But you should make the effort to find it for its wheat beer collection.

Zámocký Pivovar:
Among all the other pubs, the Zámocký Pivovar is the one where tourists flock in for drinks. The Renaissance and Gothic built castle is the most popular spot in Bratislava. So when the visitors feel thirsty after walking around, they come to the Zámocký Pivovar pub, which is located just 200m down the slope. The pub takes a modern take on the dark wood pub of yesteryears. Furnished with simple tables along the main bar, the pub bears a quaint and classic feel.
