Few Slovak Reservoirs You Must Visit

When talking about the must-see places of Slovakia, the reservoirs are definitely worth a mention. Built with the objective of storing water, preventing floods or generating electricity, these reservoirs offer some of the best sights in the country. Aside from their functional aspects, the dams are also used for various recreation purposes. Water sports opportunities are aplenty here. Just this one reason should suffice for all the water sports enthusiasts. But if you are aiming more towards some much needed relaxation, there are accommodation facilities available as well. If you are interested, here are a few reservoirs that you should visit:

Orava:
The River Orava, which runs through the Orava region, is one of the cleanest rivers in Slovakia. After several floods, it became necessary to build Orava reservoir, which is located in the northern regions of the nation. The reservoir was built from 1941 to 1953 across 35,2 km2, which makes it the biggest lake in the country. The Orava dam is one of the major tourist attractions in the country. Two of the popular resorts – Goral hotel and Slanická osada – are located in southern part of the country, which is why tourists mostly flock here. You can choose from an array of hotels, hostels, restaurants, sports facilities and equipment rentals, car camping sites and so on. For sightseeing, the boat ride tours are the ideal option. These boat tours are held four times a day. So you can catch one as per your convenience.

Domaša:
Also referred to as the “Green Perl of eastern Slovakia”, the Domaša reservoir is situated on the river Orava, close to the town of Vranov nad Topľou, and it is surrounded by Low Beskids mountain. The construction of the reservoir began in 1962, and it was completed in 1967. Few small villages like Trepec, Dobrá nad Ondavou, Kelča and Petejovce needed to be flooded to build the reservoir. The reservoir covers large expanse of 1510 hectares, and in some areas, it is deep up to 32, 5 meters. The surrounding resorts offer a wide variety of recreational activities. Ideal for fishing, the clean waters of the Domaša reservoir contains 23 species of fish.

Zemplínska Šírava:
Situated in the northern side of Východoslovenská nížina, which is located in the eastern region of Slovakia, is the Zemplínska Šírava reservoir. The construction of the reservoir started in 1961 and ended in 1965. Located near the town of Michalovce, the reservoir spans across 22-35 km2 and it has the maximum depth of 9, 5 meters. Water flows from the dam into the Laborec River, and then into the Bodrog River. Most of the recreational facilities are located in the northern part of the reservoir. The most renowned tourist centres are Hôrka, Kamenec, Paľkov, and Kaluža. Here you will get world-class amenities as well as scooters, boats, water skis, water bicycles and windsurfing kits on rental.

These three dams and reservoirs rank the highest on our list. There are, however, a number of other reservoirs that you may visit, depending on what kind of facilities you are looking for.
