Discover Why Banská Štiavnica is the most beautiful and historical town in Slovakia

One of the most  beautiful and historically interesting destinations in Slovakia is its verdant town, Banská Štiavnica. It spreads a magical trap of medieval delight. Meandering around the steeped terrace hillsides or travelling around the pristine forest, you will discover many untouched architectural beauties from the old Hungarian Kingdom of the mining days. Don’t stop yourself to read this new chapter of the long old history.

Did you know?
Once as the land of miner, Banská Štiavnica was acclaimed to be the ‘silver town’, and progressively became of the one biggest mining centre of the 18th century, in the Habsburg Monarchy. It is used to yield more than 490 metric tons of silver and 11 tons of gold from the surrounded mountains.

Not just mining as business mining schools and science became a very significant part of its developments. Early in the year 1735, the oldest mining school of the then Kingdom of Hungary was established here, it was the first university of its kind in the world.

By the 18th century Banská Štiavnica became the third biggest country of the Kingdom of Hungary nurturing over 23000 inhabitants.

With the fall of the mining, Banská Štiavnica faced a massive decline in the development. However the untouched architectures even today stand still, pleasing thousands of travelers from the world, and making Slovakia rich with historical beauty.

The Sight Seeing Story
New Chateau:
Long time ago, during the Hungarian and Turkish war, this ‘new’ castle was built as a counter- Turkish fort as a tower, only five years after the old one. Used as a museum, it now treasures the expositions of Slovak Mining, the struggle against Turkish invasions. It will be one the best spots to behold the beauty of the town with a panoramic view.

Old Chateau:
The most dominant prevalent sight of the town centre is the Old Castle, Stary Zamok. The oldest wing of this Chateau was the former parish church of Virgin Mary. Built together with the adjacent ossuary in the 13th century as the three-aisle Romanesque basilica, today it is home to the preserving of the pipes and other treasures from the past.

It is the best in the town and renowned for its wickedly strong coffee and to-die-for cakes and the well garnished food. You will also love the music that streams live, of course with the beer. You must check out the spectacular terrace.
