Slovakia takes pride in its folk
traditions and folklore. Each city, municipality and region has a unique
folklore and character. The uniqueness is evident in their music,
costumes, songs, dances, architecture, dialects, customs and traditions.
Numerous folk festivals are celebrated all across Slovakia to present
the culture of different religions. The most spectacular folk festivals
are held in mainly three towns – Detva, Myjava, and Východná. All of
these three festivals are funded by the C.I.O.F.F., which is the largest
folklore organization in the world! There are many other regional
festivals that are, in no way, less than the three aforementioned
festivals. Each festival bears a unique significance, a distinct
atmosphere and charm!
Custom and traditions:
Folk customs and traditions have a great
influence on the life of Slovak individuals. Most of these customs
originated out of fear of the unknown and the inability to explain the
various natural events. The uncertainties of life were the roots of many
myths, superstitions and legends. The Slovaks believe that by following
these customs, they can achieve health, happiness and beauty. Most of
these customs were associated with birth and death. Since the ancient
Slovaks lived in close connection to nature, most of their customs and
traditions centre round the natural cycle. However, after Christianity
arrived, several new customs and traditions were introduced. The
festivals in Slovakia are linked to specific regions. It won’t be wrong
to say that for each village, there is a separate set of customs.
Folk festivals:
Every year, below the Poľana Mountain, a
folk festival takes place. The popularity of this festival goes beyond
the borders of Slovakia. Being an international festivals celebrating
folk music, song and dance, this annual festival is eagerly awaited by
the Slovaks. The venue of the festival is the amphitheatre in Detva. In
the time of the festival, a fair is also organized where hand-made works
of art are sold. Another popular festival is Podroháč Folk Festival
that is hosted at the Museum of Orava Village Zuberec. Even this
festival is accompanied by a traditional handicraft fair. In the village
Martin, the collection and manual processing of harvest is celebrated
every year around the same time. During the summer, another exciting
folk festival takes place in Východná. This international festival
offers you a glimpse into the wonderful folk culture of the country.
The culture of the Roma people:
There are about 90,000 registered Romani
people in Slovakia, and some of them even speak their native Gypsy
language. Despite the passage of time, the Roma people have been able to
maintain their very own culture and traditions. Known to be good
musicians, singers and dancers, the Romani people have their own
folklore that they have kept alive till today. Some of the musical
instruments that these people are known for playing include violin and
cymbalo. Their dynamic and rhythmical music and dance are known and
appreciated all over the world! Even their costumes stand out from the
other cultures. They often embellish their costumes with a lot of
scarves and jewelry items.
