Check Out these Famous Castles when In Slovakia

Slovakia is home to over 300 castles, with many of them being ruins that are evocative of the distant past. Back in the days, these castles used to shelter and protect citizens of the town from ravening invaders. And thus, they stand tall as poignant storytellers of the perils of the past. Hundreds of such castles dot the landscapes of Slovakia, and they stand at the crossroads of religion, cultures and conquerors. From 14th to 15th century, three of these Slovak castles – Trenčín, Spiš and Devín – were some of the largest in all of Europe. In Slovak language, there are two words for castles. One is hrad, which means fortified, defensive structures, and the second is zámok, which means manor houses, chateaux and palaces. If you want to feel more connected to Slovakia’s rich history, visiting at least few of these castles is a must.

Spiš Castle:
The ghostly, straggling ruins of the Spiš Castle are probably one of the most magnificent sights in Slovakia. Situated on top of a lonely hill, 200 meters above ground, the castle derives its name from its surrounding landscapes of Spiš. Covering an expanse of 10 acres, Spiš Castle is Central Europe’s largest fortified castle. In 1993, the castle and few other surrounding monuments were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle bears a rich history. Although there is evidence that suggest habitation since the Neolithic times, the castle started off as one tower in 1113. Later it was enlarged to provide protection the wealthy citizens of the surrounding towns. Soon enough the castle became a cultural, economical, administrative and political centre of Szepes county.

Trenčín Castle:
The third largest Slovak castle and also one of the National Cultural Monuments of the nation, Trenčín Castle is situated on the steep slope above the city of Trenčín. Because of its location, the castle offers a spectacular view of the Váh River. The history of the castle goes back to the Roman Empire. First built in the 11th c., and then expanded in the 14th c., the Trenčín Castle houses a stone rotunda that is even older, and was probably built in the 9th century during the Great Moravia period. The castle was also home of the Slovak legend Matúš Csák. Trenčín was also declared the capital of the Kingdom of the Váh and the Tatras when Lord Matúš Csák fought and won against the Hungarian.

Bratislava Castle:
Situated on the rocky hill of the Little Carpathians, the Bratislava Castle is another must-visit castle in Slovakia. From here, you will get a magnificent view of Austria and Bratislava. This massive castle features four towers in each corner, and the sight may evoke the image of an upturned table. The history of this castle dates back to the late Stone Age. As the Main Castle in the Kingdom of Hungary, the Bratislava Castle had a crucial role to play in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Through the ages, the castle weathered attacks from the Celts, Romans, Slavs, Germans, Austrians and Hungarians. The structure needed to be rebuilt a number of times, and the latest reconstruction began in 2008.
