Carp Marks The Start of Christmas in Slovakia


When you see the wading pools popping around the Slovak city filled with carp or kapor, you will know Christmas is very close, max by a week. You will loads of carps even at the fish counters of grocery stores. Coming of these carps are hardest to miss, so why don’t you pick some prepare some Slovak specialty, when in country.

Carps are kept in cold water no matter how big or small the wading pools are which are mostly manned by the fish monger. Just point at the carp that grabs your attention and they provide the same with the help of net and a scale, so you can pay happily return to your abode with the new carp! It’s thrilling to be like the locals, away from home, isn’t it?

Walking down the busiest streets of Bratislava, while you manage the huge rush and maneuver you way back to your hotel, you might experience something wiggling through a plastic bag against your legs. Don’t get too scared, it’s just another packet of carp, to subtly tell you the Christmas menu of the Slovak families.

The carp is kept for some more days in the bathtub until Christmas Eve, when it will be finally skinned and gutted, sliced into steaks, soaked in milk, breaded and fried and finally garnished to be served on the dinner table. As per the Slovak tradition, eating meat before Christmas Eve is kept as fast, for the Christ child. Other than carp, Slovak enjoys trout and salmons, but the whole thing about fish eating is become a standard in Slovakia, at this time. Drawing some ancient traditions, ‘Catholics and orthodox ate only fish that were salted or cooked, while the fried fish culture began from 20th century that were served with potato salad’. So the practice is not that old!

The gigantic fish hat looks a goldfish is bottom feeding, with lots of bones but has some incredible pleasant taste to lure your tongue. Ace at the bone removing process to avoid going the emergency room, and you will totally love this carp eating tradition.

Other traditional foods that accompanies the carp are, Oblatky, Kapustnica, cutting an apple, Vianocka, to name some. Oblatky are the wafers that are relished 365 days in Slovakia as much in US. The market are filled with these wafers and even trubicky and commonly found on the Christmas tables. Some families drizzle it with honey or sprinkle it with garlic seasoning. Kapustnica recipe can be your favorite Slovak cook. It is soup preparation with bunch of items like dried mushrooms, sauerkraut or meats, but it varies from family to family. Cutting an apple is another big tradition, signifying good health. Cut the apple to find full and healthy seed pods for a healthy new year ahead. But it’s just another tradition, so you can avoid the risks of finding misfortune. Vianocka are sweet knotted bread with raisins beaked with perfect butter drops on the top.
