Exploring the High Tatras – One of Slovakia’s Natural Treasures

High Tatras may not be as high or as big as the Alps, but that not reduce their magnificence even a bit. If you have been to Slovakia, or are planning to visit the country soon, The National Park of Tatras should definitely be on your itinerary. Founded in 1949, and located in the northern side of the country, the Tatras national park is one of the protected areas of Slovakia that consists of unique flora and fauna. the national park is the country’s first national park. However, the polish side of the Tatras gained a similar statute 5 years later.

Adorned with crashing waterfalls, ultramarine mountain lakes, pristine snowfields, shimmering alpine meadows and undulating pine forests, the Tatras National Park offers a spectacular view that would get any nature photographer dreaming! Although most of the jagged peaks of the Tatra Mountain are part of the national park, it has not arrested development here. the Slovakian ski slopes are home to famous ski resorts and skiing spots.  International Union for Conservation of Nature are one of the watchdog groups that keep a check on the national park.

In the middle of the mountain range, you will find three major resort towns that stretch from west to east. If you are looking for the more traditional ski centre, you have got Štrbské Pleso, which is the most popular and most crowded of all. Heavily constructed and developed, it is definitely a ski resort worth considering. When you travel 11kms to the east, you will come across Smokovec, which is a brilliant combination of old and new, lower and upper settlements. Here you may get a more 20th century feel. This place is also hub for most of the lodges and high class services.

Travel 5kms further and you will end up in Tatranská Lomnica, the quietest and quaintest village. All of these areas offer you access to the mountains, and you can choose from options like chairlift, funicular and cable car. Poprad, which is the closest city, is situated 14km south from central Starý Smokovec.

When planning your trip to Slovakia, you need to remember that the highest trails stay closed between November and June because of heavy snowfall. The period between June and July can be too rainy. July and August, though the warmest and best time to visit, it is also the most crowded time of the year. Visiting between October and April is the best idea since hotel prices and crowds both stay at their lowest at this time of the year.
