Popular Slovak Drinks You Should Try

Turks and Hungarians came to Slovakia for its natural resources, and so do the modern tourists! Throughout the years, this humble nation attracted generations of globetrotters with their modest tourism motto “A Part of Europe Worth Visiting”. The tall, sprawling mountains are excellent for adventure sports such as snowboarding and skiing. The rambling hilly landscapes are good for hiking and camping activities. Apart from all these, if there is something else that Slovakia is known for, it has to be the popular beverages! If you love chilling with a drink or two, Slovakia has plenty of choices to offer you. Here are some of the popular drinks that you must try out:

Beer:
Much like their Czech counterparts, Slovaks are also known for their beer brewing tradition. Numerous small breweries are scattered all across the country. Most of these places sell local beers, which you won’t find anywhere else. Pils is the most popular type of beer, and it is produced by well-known brands such as Smädný mních, which means “thirsty monk”. Šariš is also a popular brand. But if you want to try the best and widely exported Slovak beer, get Zlaty bazant or Golden Pheasant. Corgon is also a popular dark beer that leaves a sweet aftertaste.

Borovička:
Borovička is a type of strong spirit that is made of juniper berries. It is often considered to be the Slovak version of gin. The drink has a golden or white color, and it is also quite popular in Czech Republic and Poland. The name of the liquor is derived from borievka, which is juniper in Slovak language. The drink has the typical tart taste and herbal aroma. Borovička was originally made by distilling malt wine. But the spirit that was produced this way tasted awful. So a few herbs were added to the recipe to make the liquor taste and smell better.

Slovak wine:
Even though viticulture is not a huge part of Slovak culture, it has been part of it since ages. It was the ancient Romans that brought wine production to this nation. Since the first time it was introduced, wine making has spread throughout the country. Nowadays, however, it is more focused in three major regions – the southwest, small regions between Bratislava and Trnava, and in the East. The production of sweet white wines has received a major boost because of the Danube River and the favorable weather conditions and soil of the region.
